Northern Regional Domestic Violence Response Team Seeks Additional Volunteers: Applications Available for Spring Training Session

The Township of Aberdeen Police Department, in collaboration with 180-Turning Lives Around, has a team of specially-trained advocates available to meet confidentially with victims of domestic violence at police headquarters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.. The volunteer advocates, who are civilian members of the community, work in conjunction with the police to provide support, information, and referrals to victims of domestic violence at police headquarters.  The advocates also discuss with the victim their legal rights in regard to obtaining a Temporary Restraining Order.  DVRT volunteers, whose identities are kept anonymous, are available 24-hours a day to meet with victims.  The volunteer advocates are trained to empower victims to make decisions about their own lives.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, possess a valid driver’s license, be willing to serve on an on-call shift basis, and submit to background investigations and fingerprinting. The 40-hour mandatory intensive training course will be provided to successful applicants. 180-Turning Lives Around will be conducting the four-week training April 27th through May 20th in the courtroom at Hazlet Police Headquarters. Classes are being held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings.  Prior knowledge of domestic violence is not required. The Township of Aberdeen Police Department and 180-Turning Lives Around are committed to a culturally diverse team to better serve the community, therefore bi-lingual capability is a plus.  To request an application or for further information please call Sergeant Darrell Oliver at 732-583-4200 ext. 762 or go to “police forms”.
