New GDL changes effective May 1, 2010
The Aberdeen Township Police Department wants to remind residents of the new restrictions scheduled to go into effect on May 1, 2010 for drivers under 21 who are subject to the requirements of New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL).
Drivers subject to the GDL (including those with a special learners permit, examination permit or probationary license) must display a special decal on both license plates of any motor vehicle they operate.
The decals, which are available at all Motor Vehicle Agency offices for $4 a pair, are easily affixed to the plates using a system that also allows for removal when the GDL holder is not behind the wheel.
Along with the requirement to display the decals on their license plates, drivers subject to the GDL:
- May not be on the road between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- May transport only one passenger in the vehicle (this restriction is waived if the GDL holder is accompanied by a parent or guardian, or is transporting his/her dependents).
- May not use a cell phone (hand held or hands-free), I-pod or any other wireless electronic device.
- Must ensure that all vehicle occupants are wearing seat belts.
- May not plea bargain any point-carrying traffic ticket.
