ABERDEEN RECEIVES GRANT FROM NJ DEPT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (4/22/09)—Aberdeen Township today announced that it will receive $20,938 from The State of New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Clean Communities program. The State expects to disburse the finds by the end of April 2009.
According to Aberdeen Township Manager Joseph Criscuolo, the funds will be used to pay for an employee to clean roadsides and parks; educational programs for children, including a puppet show about recycling and litter for students in local schools; and educational outreach to residents about recycling in Aberdeen as communicated through the township’s calendar and newsletters.
New Jersey Clean Communities is a statewide litter-abatement program created by the passage of the Clean Communities Act. The program is managed by the New Jersey DEP, Department of Treasury, and Clean Communities Council. It’s supported by local governments, businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals who work together to keep New Jersey clean.
The Clean Communities Act, passed first in 1986 and later in 2002, establishes a funding mechanism for the program by placing a user-fee on manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors who may produce litter-generating products. Collected by the Department of Treasury and disbursed by the DEP, the fee generates approximately $14 million each year.
Twenty-one counties and 595 municipalities were eligible to receive Clean Communities funding during 2009. The amount of the entitlement was calculated based on an estimate that $13 million in anti-litter fees will be collected through March 2009. Aberdeen’s allocation is based on its proportionate share of housing units and municipal road mileage.
The 2009 final payouts—including the allocation schedule, road mileage schedule, grant guidelines, and New Jersey Clean Communities Council statistical reporting forms—will be posted on the Council’s website, www.njclean.org by the middle of May.
