VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WHALE CREEK TRIBUTORY CLEANUP ON MAY 1ST

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (4/15/10) – Volunteers are needed to assist in a cleanup of the fresh water tributary leading into Whale Creek in Aberdeen on Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The event will be conducted by NY/NJ Baykeeper in conjunction with the Bayshore Regional Watershed Council and the Aberdeen Environmental Committee.

The stream flows through riparian forest spotted with vernal pools and flows down to the tidal flood plain.  Home to many native species, the area was recently protected by Aberdeen Township as open space.  Turkeys, foxes, ground hogs, turtles, frogs, Northern Harriers, Red Tailed Hawks, Coopers Hawks, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and woodpeckers are among the many species calling the area home.

The group will meet on Greenwood Avenue across from North Concourse Road in Aberdeen, across from the Municipal Sewage Authority pump station.  Participants are advised to wear boots or waders, as the site is extremely muddy.  To sign-up or obtain additional information, call (732) 888-9870, ext. 6, or e-mail Amy Testa at testa@nynjbaykeeper.org.
