ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (3/16 /11) – Aberdeen Township is inviting residents and community groups to take part in “Aberdeen Cares,” an initiative designed to encourage neighbors to help neighbors by providing community service to those who require assistance. The program will be administered by a special committee comprised of Aberdeen Council members and residents.
According to Mayor Fred Tagliarini, the idea for “Aberdeen Cares” resulted from the response to the Township’s request to residents asking them to help neighbors who could not shovel their sidewalks due to age or physical limitations. “The members of the Council started thinking that perhaps a more formal program in which residents volunteered to assist neighbors all year long, not just during the winter, could be created,” Tagliarini explained.
As envisioned by the Township Council, activities such as mowing lawns, cleaning gutters or food shopping for elderly or homebound residents are among the types of projects that could be performed through “Aberdeen Cares.”
“Apart from helping neighbors in need, ‘Aberdeen Cares’ will also benefit our younger residents looking to perform meaningful volunteer work that can fulfill community service requirements for scouting, confirmation, bar and bat mitzvahs, or academic needs,” said Councilperson Margaret Montone.
In the coming weeks, the Council will be reaching out to community groups, schools and houses of worship with information about the initiative. In the meantime, members of the community interested in joining the “Aberdeen Cares” committee or performing community service can contact Aberdeen Township Interim Township Manager Holly Reycraft at (732) 583-4200, ext. 117.
