ABERDEEN GREEN TEAM’S PROJECT PORCHLIGHT A BIG SUCCESS
ABERDEEN, N.J. (4/22 /10)— The Aberdeen Township Green Team’s Project Porchlight event resulted in the delivery of energy saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to over 1,400 households within the township.
More than 50 volunteers delivered the free CFL bulbs throughout the community at the four-hour event on Saturday, April 17, according to Frank Huza, chairman of The Aberdeen Township Environmental and Shade Tree Advisory Board. The program was coordinated by The Environmental Board and Project Porchlight.
Funding for the bulb distribution was provided by Project Porchlight, a grassroots energy efficiency program that encourages people to switch from old fashioned incandescent light bulbs to new energy efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.
The Green Team’s participation in Project Porchlight earned the group 10 points toward the township’s goal of becoming a “Sustainable Jersey” community. To achieve “sustainable community” certification, towns work to accumulate 100 points by completing required and optional tasks, each worth 10 to 40 points. In addition, municipalities must complete two of the following four priority actions: completing an energy audit of municipal buildings, a carbon footprint, a sustainable land use pledge, or a water conservation ordinance. From there, municipalities can select from a number of elective actions for implementation based on what is most appropriate for their town.
“We were very pleased by the response to our Project Porchlight event,” said Mayor Fred Tagliarini. “More than 50 area residents responded to our call for volunteers, and homeowners were very responsive to our efforts.”
