ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP COUNCIL HONORS PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
JIM LAURO ON OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (12/7/09) – The Aberdeen Township Council has honored its longtime Public Works Director Jim Lauro on the occasion of his upcoming retirement, with a proclamation honoring him for 42 years of service.

Lauro joined the municipality’s (then Matawan Township) staff in 1967 as a laborer in the Public Works Department and was promoted to Parks Foreman in 1976.  In 1981, he was named General Foreman and was promoted again in 1986 to his current position of Public Works Director. In 1992, Lauro was certified by the State of New Jersey as a Public Works Manager, becoming just the 20th person in the state to attain this certification.

The proclamation, issued on December 4, noted that Lauro “has faithfully served in each of these positions with character, honesty and in the best interest of our citizens.” The Aberdeen resident was also recognized for his commitment to the community, which includes serving as volunteer fireman and as a fire commissioner with the Aberdeen Township Hose & Chemical Company, as a longtime member of the Aberdeen Township Planning Board, and as a member of the Matawan Italian American Club.  In 2008, he was honored by the Italian American Society as its Man of the Year.

In November, Lauro was elected to the Aberdeen Township Council for a four-year term that will begin on January 1, 2010.
