ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP HOLDS INITIAL MEETING WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (6/21/10) –Township officials pledged a new era of cooperation between local government and the business community during an inaugural meeting with Aberdeen business owners. The goal of this and future meetings is to enhance the relationship between township government and local businesses.

Responding to requests from several attendees at the June 17th meeting, Mayor Fred Tagliarini, Councilman Owen Drapkin and Township Manager Joseph Criscuolo agreed to the immediate creation of a committee that would seek to review Aberdeen’s ordinances governing signage for businesses. Following their review of Aberdeen’s existing rules as well as those in place in other municipalities, the committee of business owners and municipal officials will then present recommendations to the Township Council for consideration. Among other things, these will likely include new, clearly written, regulations for temporary signage to promote grand openings, business anniversaries and other special promotional events.

“While we will continue to enforce regulations against excessive signs promoting companies that are often not even located here, we know there has to be a balance regarding signage in general,” Criscuolo told the attendees. “We want to work with you to come up with solutions that allow you to build your business while respecting our residents’ desire to avoid the visual clutter that can be seen in other towns.”

He urged businesses to directly contact Maxine Rescorl, assistant director of the Planning, Zoning and Development department, to discuss any plans regarding Township rules. “Contacting us in advance will avoid problems later on,” Criscuolo said.

“The main reason we’re here tonight is communication,” said Tagliarini. “We in local government need to have better communication with the lifeline of our town: our businesses. We want you to communicate what we can do to improve the business climate in Aberdeen.”

To that end, Drapkin—who serves as the Township Council’s liaison to the business community and has owned a business in another municipality for over 30 years—stated: “Our goal is to make it easier for you to do business here.”

In addition to the signage committee, the business community will be forming a second committee that will explore means for businesses and the Township Council to work jointly on promoting Aberdeen Day and other special events in the township.
