ABERDEEN SWEARS IN NEW MAYOR AND THREE NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS
AT REORGANIZATION MEETING

ABERDEEN, N.J. (1/1/2010)—At its annual reorganization meeting, Aberdeen Township today formally swore in Councilman Fred Tagliarini as Mayor and Greg Cannon, James Lauro and Margaret Montone as Council Members.

The newly-elected Council Members joined veteran members Vincent Vinci, who was elected today by the Council to serve as Deputy Mayor, Owen Drapkin and Wilhelmina Gumbs. All were sworn in by Township Clerk Karen Ventura.

At the meeting, the Council also announced the appointments of Daniel McCarthy, Rogut McCarthy, as Township Attorney; Steve Rogut, Rogut McCarthy, as Special Bond Counsel; Scott Basen as Municipal Court Judge; David J. Samuel, P.E., CME Associates, as Township Engineer; Patrick Healy, Healy & Falk, as Township Prosecutor; Thomas Fallon, Fallon and Larsen, as Township Auditor; Richard Coppola, Coppola & Coppola, as Township Planner; Marc Schram as Public Defender and Special Counsel-Tax Appeals & Foreclosures; and Eric Bernstein, Eric M. Bernstein & Associates, as Special Counsel-Labor.  With the exception of Judge Basen, who has a statutory three-year appointment that ends December 31, 2012, all of the professionals were sworn in for one-year terms.

During his remarks, Mayor Tagliarini outlined a number of goals and objectives for the year ahead.  “The long awaited senior housing complex and new senior center on Church Street is now well on its way to becoming a reality,” he said. “I am also pleased to report that advanced discussions have started again on the redevelopment of the Anchor Glass site and the transformation of the Train Station area into a downtown district that Aberdeen can be proud of.”

Mayor Tagliarini added that while the timing and scope of the Anchor Glass and train station projects are subject to real estate market conditions, “both plans are envisioned to create exciting communities that blend retail, commercial, residential and other uses and amenities.”

Other programs discussed by Mayor Tagliarini included two initiatives created to stabilize costs, including Aberdeen’s recently formed “Green Team,” whose goals include reducing Township energy costs by purchasing less expensive electricity and a newly established Shared Services Committee with Matawan and Keyport that is charged with exploring opportunities to share services and reduce redundancies in an effort to cut costs for taxpayers in the three municipalities.

Mayor Tagliarini also announced the formation of two volunteer boards, the “Aberdeen Business Council” and a Senior Citizen Advisory Board.

“There are a lot of challenges ahead and this council is ready, willing and able to accomplish the tasks before us,” he concluded.
