Q1.

How do you obtain a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or a Permit to Purchase a Handgun?

You must apply at the Aberdeen Police Department Detective Division. Applications are normally accepted Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 10:00 am except for legal holidays. Exceptions will be made under certain circumstances. Applicants are urged to phone 732-566-2054 prior to coming to verify that a detective is present. Follow the link to the left to download a copy of the application and the mental health records search. Both must be completed in their entirety or your application will be delayed. Firearms applications may take up to 8 weeks to be processed. Please contact Detective Vaccaro for additional information.

Are there fees involved?

A2.

Fees - $60.25 in the form of a money order, certified check or cashier's check payable to "Division of State Police - SBI"
$5.00 check, cash, or money order made payable to the Township of Aberdeen.
$2.00 check, cash or money order made payable to the Township of Aberdeen for each permit requested.
*Applicants who already possess a Firearms Identification Card but have not had any activity for a period of three years or more are required to submit a certified check or money order in the amount $18.00 made payable to the Division of State Police S.B.I.

How do you buy handguns, including bb, pellet, and black powder handguns.

A Permit to Purchase a Handgun must be completed on each handgun transferred in this state. It is the responsibility of the seller of the handgun to ascertain that the buyer has a valid Permit to Purchase a Handgun and one additional form of identification. The permit must be completed by the seller and buyer. It is the responsibility of the seller to forward the copies to the appropriate authority. Instructions are printed on the permit.

How do you transport firearms?

A5.

Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported.
Ammunition must be transported in a separate container and locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console.
