ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP OFFERS DROP OFF SERVICE
FOR WORN AND UNSERVICABLE AMERICAN FLAGS
ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (4/21/08) – The Aberdeen Township Public Works Department is now collecting American flags that are no longer suitable for display for distribution to organizations that perform approved disposal ceremonies.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, any American flag that is worn, damaged or tattered beyond repair should be retired in a respectful and dignified manner. The preferred method is burning which, in this case, signifies purification and rebirth. The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags was approved by The American Legion in 1937. Today, the American Legion and Boy Scouts of America are among the organizations performing flag retirement ceremonies.
Flags can be dropped off at the Public Works Garage on Lenox Road, off Cliffwood Avenue, weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., or on the third Saturday of the month between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The flags should be placed in the red, white and blue mail box marked “Flags.”
For more information, contact the Aberdeen Township Public Works Department at (732) 583-4200, ext. 174.
